Visual Complexity, How to Represent Complex Systems

Just a quick post for further reference, Visual Complexity looks like a fascinating web site. I've only had time to give it a quick once over, but I'll be giving it more reading time soon. I see amazing looking graphics relating to knowledge networks, biology, art and more. (HT: Jack Knack on Adobe)

Watch Your TV on Any PC in the World!!???

I heard Rush highlight the Slingbox at the end of his show today. Being instantly intrigued, I looked it up right away. The Slingbox, by Sling Media:
a groundbreaking piece of hardwired ingenuity that will literally transform the way you watch television. The Slingbox enables you to watch your TV programming from wherever you are by turning virtually any Internet-connected PC into your personal TV. Whether you’re in another room or in another country, you’ll always have access to your television.
Wow, if I had TV at home I'd really want this. A WSJ review is here.

Making a Computer Out of Legos (For Real)

Here's a fun idea combo to interest folks in my family who are into Artificial Intelligence and/or Legos. Yes, we have at least one of each of these types.

Talk About a Killer App!

Roger L. Simon is right when he calls Google's new free tool, Google Earth, thrilling. If your computer is a PC and not more than 2 years old, be sure to download and launch this free application! First thing I did with it at 6 AM this morning was (natch) find my house and watch Google Earth fly down from outer space to hover 1000 feet directly over my house. The next thing I did was find the house in Ohio that I grew up in. As soon as I entered the address of my growing up in house, the application swept from the point where I now live, up over the eastern US, to zero in on my growing up in house. Unbelievable!

And don't miss Yosemite National Park and Niagra Falls.

Rush Limbaugh Show DittoPod Index - June 27, 2005

This is a brief description of the topics covered on Rush's program today. The time noted indicates where in the podcast (mp3 file) the topic begins.

Hour 1 - Rush Limbaugh Program

:08 - Where recent Supreme Court decisions are concerned, the Constitution has been rendered meaningless. This court is incoherent.
3:48 - The court has taken the little guy's property rights away. One group of private citizens can now take your property and give it to another group of private citizens so the government can get more tax revenue. The court is clearly a liberal court.
12:00 - The New York Times is the paper of the elite and it does not like the concept of property rights. If there are no property rights then we do not have a constitutional representative republic. We are dangerously close to a scary version of Marxism and socialism.
15:15 - The Constitution does not prevent the public display of the 10 Commandments. According to this court, the 10 Commandments outside a government building is a statement of history. 10 Commandments displays inside courthouses is not. Scalia's dissent is scathing, stating that the court must rule from principles.
18:30 - The court sent the file sharing case back to the lower court for trial. Peer to peer file sharing operators can be tried.
19:23 - It's about time that the administration started saying what Karl Rove said about liberals. From the outraged response by Democrats it's clear that Rove hit the nail on the head.
32:00 - Caller: Asks if the property rights Supreme Court decision doesn't revert power back to state governments. Rush: walks the caller through what could easily happen to particularly lower class, poorer Americans. Caller doesn't like it, but thinks that it's not a liberal vs conservative issue. Rush vehemently states that it certainly is, that no conservative court would ever have done this. For the benefit of the state government, the government gets to decide who gets to own land.

PDF Blogger

I've got some hard copy pages that I really want to convert to a searchable pdf. Through a search engine I found a really neat blog, PDF for Lawyers - How to use PDFs in the practice of law - Tips & Techniques, that answered my questions. (Caveat: I haven't had a chance to actually try this yet in real life.) Anyway, the blog tutorial is here.
