Able Danger Blogger Conference Call with Curt Weldon
I attended a 90 minute Able Danger blogger conference call this evening with Rep. Curt Weldon. Be sure to read these bloggers' reports about this call:
We hope to have some audio clips available for you by tomorrow, but in the mean time I can tell you we got a lot of new details about the China study, and several new scoops on the Able Danger story in general.
Let me jump to a tidbit that came at the end of the conference call. Weldon noted that the DIA held an agency wide conference recently in Florida - pulling many of their people in from their posts - and a top level DIA person said one of the Agency’s top priorities was to shutdown the Able Danger story. Not terrorism - Able Danger. I live and work in DC and that has got to be the dumbest thing I have ever heard. If people wanted this story to go away they would fix all the problems - none of which involve classified material or details. All the problems surrounding Able Danger are related to people misusing their positions to hide personally embarrassing information. In the Clinton years it was apparently studies regarding technology leaks to China. In the Bush administration it appears to be bad decisions, turf wars and protecting empires. But in all cases, national security is second to the DC CYA.
We got into every aspect of this case, which you will hear in the audio, from the China aspect to the destruction of unclassified data. So stayed tuned.
I have a different perspective from Arkin. When I was a Federal employee, I had occasion to blow the whistle myself. Shaffer's testimony rings true. Every word. This is how bureaucrats cover their asses.
Also attending were Rory O'Connor, Pierre Legrand, Dana of Common Sense Political Thought.
